MIRI: A block of double-storey shoplots were razed in a pre-dawn fire in the rural town of Bakong in Beluru sub-district in northern Sarawak.
Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in its latest report that nine units of shoplots were completely destroyed in the 1am incident located some 100km south of Miri.
Bomba stations from Bakong and Marudi town received an alert on the fire at 12.50am Saturday.
Fire personnel who rushed to the scene reported that the fire had spread very quickly and managed to put out the blaze at about 4am.
Fortunately, all the occupants managed to escape and no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.
Bomba Sarawak said it will carry out an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and losses incurred by the businesses that sold sundry goods, food and household essentials.
The Bakong township is a transit point between Miri and Marudi.
